A new year can be the catalyst for adventure, a time for earnest reflection, or the starting point for positive change. Coined by behavioral scientists, “The Fresh Start Effect” describes the psychological motivation to set goals after landmarks such as New Year’s Day. Research shows this effect may help bolster our efforts and lead to greater success. Whether you latch on to this mental benchmark, or choose an ordinary Tuesday to set your goals, you don’t have to overhaul your life to improve your health. Here are some simple changes that will make an impact.
Simple Habits for a Healthier New Year:
Drink More Water
As we age, we become less sensitive to our body’s thirst signals and our risk of dehydration increases. In addition, medications and chromic conditions can increase fluid loss. By the time we feel thirsty, most people are already dehydrated. In addition to drinking water with meals, aim to create new hydration habits, such as drinking a full glass upon waking up and using a large water bottle to visually track your intake throughout the day.

Add a New Fruit or Vegetable Each Week
Expand your pallet and try something new or commit to adding more fruits and vegetables to your plate. Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables is also a great way to boost your immunity during the cold and flu season.
Turn off Technology While Eating
If you’re like many people who typically take their meals with a side of social media or a television show, try limiting distractions instead. Turn off the TV, take your plate to the table, and leave your cell phone in another room. Through mindful eating, we can slow down and engage our senses to fully enjoy the experience. When we are tuned in to our bodies, we also tend to eat less.
Take a class or Learn Something New
Henry Ford said, “Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty.” If that’s true, the fountain of youth is easily accessible.
