Hearing Clarity:
Early Signs of Hearing Loss

If you have noticed that it’s difficult to understand conversations in restaurants and other social settings, you aren’t alone. A reduction in hearing clarity when others are speaking is the most commonly acknowledged symptom of hearing loss. According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), one out of three people between the ages of 65 and 74 have some degree of hearing loss, and that number increases to 50 percent for those over 75.

Are you able to hear someone speaking to you, but you misunderstand or misinterpret them? This is because there are pitches and frequencies that you’re able to hear, and those that you are not. When you experience an inability to hear high pitched or high frequency sounds, you’re often missing integral parts of a word or sentence. Thus, you will hear the sounds but not every tone will register. Schedule an appointment today to learn more about how we can help you achieve hearing clarity.

Cognitive Decline:
The Hidden Dangers of Hearing Loss

Treating hearing loss goes well beyond the benefits of improving your everyday lifestyle. The longer you wait to seek treatment, the more susceptible you are to cognitive decline, dementia and social isolation. A 12-year study by researchers at Johns Hopkins found that mild hearing loss doubled the incidence of dementia. Moderate loss tripled the incidence, and people with a severe hearing impairment were five times more likely to develop dementia.

According to a major study by The National Council on the Aging (NCOA), those with untreated hearing loss were more likely to report depression, anxiety, and paranoia and were less likely to participate in organized social activities, compared to those who wear hearing devices. If you are experiencing hearing loss, don’t delay. Managing your hearing health is the best way to stay healthy and engaged so you can live the lifestyle of your dreams.

Tinnitus:
More Common Than You Think

Did you know that tinnitus (or ringing in the ears) is one of the most commonly acknowledged symptoms of hearing loss? Tinnitus affects 15-20% of people and is most often associated with age-related hearing loss.

Tinnitus might sound like a roaring, clicking, hissing, buzzing, or ringing in the ears that is worsened at night. It also occurs during exposure to loud noises, when you have impacted cerumen (ear wax), or in situations where you are not distracted or engaged with other stimuli. If you think you suffer from tinnitus, don’t delay. An audiologist from The Villages Health will be able to diagnose and treat the condition utilizing the most recent advances in research.

Hearing Assessments and Diagnostics: What to Expect

When it comes to something as important as your hearing, we take no shortcuts. You will receive state-of-the-art audiologic assessments and rehabilitative services, no matter what stage of hearing loss you are experiencing.

When you meet with an audiologist with The Villages Health, we will do both a hearing and lifestyle assessment. You will receive a simple pass/fail hearing screening. If you fail the screening, this could indicate hearing loss. The next step is to take a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation to examine your hearing threshold, speech discrimination, speech in noise testing, and air and bone conduction. These four types of hearing tests will allow us to determine whether you have hearing loss, what type of hearing loss you may have, to what degree and what type of treatment you may need.

In addition to comprehensive hearing consultations, our board-certified audiologists can address the follow conditions and perform:
