If you are experiencing hearing loss, it may be tempting to visit a hearing device retail store. Unfortunately, when you visit a stand-alone hearing retail store there is a good likelihood that you will be fitted for a hearing device without the vital consultation with a doctor of audiology.
When you visit an audiologist, you are speaking with a highly trained doctor who takes a health care approach to your hearing, one that involves state-of-the-art diagnostics and care delivery. When you visit a retail hearing aid store, a sales approach to addressing your hearing loss is what you will likely encounter. We recommend speaking with a licensed audiologist who puts your health above profits to ensure you’re getting the right care for your unique medical needs.
Understand the Difference between an Audiologist and an ENT
It can be confusing to decide whether to see an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist or an audiologist. Chances are, if you have been missing out in conversations or struggling to understand people in day-to-day situations, an audiologist can help.
An ENT physician specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases of the mouth, ears, nose and throat. An audiologist specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of hearing issues. They also have extensive training on fitting and adjusting hearing devices.
Audiologists are experts at identifying whether you need to see an ENT and/or a neurologist. Unless you’ve had a recent trauma to the head or ear, or you’re having balance issues, a change in your hearing can typically be addressed by an audiologist.
Choosing to see an audiologist at The Villages Health first can save you the time and added expense from waiting to see a specialty physician, like an ENT or a neurologist. We refer patients to board-certified specialty physicians as necessary for treatment of issues outside the scope of audiology services.
